Preparing For Cold and Flu Season

There is more to chiropractic than most people presume. In fact, while nearly everyone understands the general benefits of regular chiropractic care, there are a few things that aren’t widely known.

For example, did you know chiropractic adjustments aid in your overall health? Having your spine adjusted by a licensed chiropractor helps to relieve the pain from your back and neck, but it also helps to remove any interference that you may have in your immune system.

Our immune system is directly connected to our spine, and when it is not properly aligned or subluxated (misalignment of the spine), it may throw your entire system off track. Thus, weakening your immune system.

Chiropractors may use a variety of spinal manipulations to help relieve this compression and, in turn, open the pathway to a properly functioning immune system.

Along with chiropractic care, taking pharmaceutical-grade supplements is essential. Below are supplements the doctors at Clairpointe Family Chiropractic recommend taking during cold and flu season.

Buffered Lemon Powdered C

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin most widely known for its role in supporting immune health.

Zinc Lozenges

When you get a sore throat, it’s generally the start of an upper respiratory infection. If you can stop it in its tracks, you usually won't get the rest of the illness. Zinc enhances your immune response so it can beat the bacteria or virus before it gets fully into your system.

Viracid

Viracid includes a powerful combination of key nutrients and botanical extracts that provide support for immune challenges. When you feel a cold coming on, taking Viricid can help boost your immune system and shorten your sick time.

Vitamin K2 w/ D3

Vitamin D has always been known as a promoter of good bone health. Now research is showing that it is also a key element in good immune function. Combining it with Vitamin K2 is the best absorbable D product on the market. It is especially good to take Vitamin D in the winter months when sunlight is not too abundant.

Home Remedies

Here are home remedies the doctors suggest practicing at home to help reduce your cold or flu symptoms.

Honey

Honey is one of the most powerful remedies for treating the common flu. It's packed full of antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that help your body to recover from the flu. It's important to know that honey shouldn't be given to children under the age of one.

Hydrate

Drinking plenty of water will also help you prevent dehydration.

Lemon

Many people consider lemon to be one of the best ways to treat the flu. Lemon is known for its potent antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. Plus, this citrus fruit is also anti-inflammatory.  To use lemon against the flu, squeeze the juice of half a lemon and mix it with a warm glass of water. Drink the mixture several times a day until symptoms weaken. You may also mix the lemon with some honey to make it more appetizing.

Ginger

Ginger has strong anti-inflammatory characteristics, and its warming effects make ginger a reliable ingredient for fighting the flu. Ginger also helps to strengthen the immune system, helping to ward off other infectious diseases. To use ginger, you can make tea by mixing grated ginger with boiling water. You can also drink ginger juice diluted with orange juice. If you can stand the strong taste, you may also eat it directly.

Garlic

Researchers often sing the praises of garlic as a healthful ingredient and superfood. Because of its natural antiviral and antiseptic properties, garlic makes for a great helper in the fight against the common flu. As an added benefit, the immune-boosting components of garlic help to strengthen the body's natural protection against infection. To reap the benefits of garlic, consume a few cloves of minced garlic per day.

Steam

Using steam helps to get rid of the toxins in your body, allowing it to heal you from the flu. Pour boiling water into a large bowl. Then, place your face above the water, and put a large cloth over your head, making sure that the steam doesn't escape. You can breathe in the steam for immediate relief.

Neti Pot

Neti pots are one of the most effective treatments for many flu symptoms. You can readily cure a stuffy nose by using a neti pot. To use this innovative instrument, fill the pot with a saline solution. Then, tilt your head and pour the water into one of the nostrils, allowing it to clear the passages. It's important to use sterile water, preferably distilled. If your symptoms don't go away, consult your doctor.
