  What Is TMJ? TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint. It’s an important joint formed by your skull and your jaw bone and involves the muscles needed for chewing.    Your TMJ acts like a sliding hinge and connects your jawbone to your skull. It is responsible for opening and closing your mouth, allowing the jaw to move smoothly up and down and side to side, and enabling you to talk, chew, and yawn.   Symptoms Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders may include: Pain or tenderness of your jaw Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints Aching pain in and around your ear Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing Aching facial pain Locking of the joint makes it difficult to open or close your mouth. TMJ disorders can also cause a clicking sound or grating sensation when you open your mouth or chew.
