Our Story

When Dr. Gary Shoemaker was a child, he and his family would see Dr. Edmonds, on the corner of Yorkshire and Mack Ave, in Grosse Pointe Park to get chiropractic adjustments regularly. But, back then, it was an uncommon thing to do. Dr. Edmonds would teach science at Lakeview High School during the day and come home and practice chiropractic in the evening in an office he built in his garage.

Young Dr. Shoemaker watched Dr. Edmonds treat his Uncle Harold, a crippled mechanic, from barely working due to back pain to becoming a full-time iron worker by being under chiropractic care regularly. Watching Dr. Edmonds treat his family through the years inspired Dr. Shoemaker to become a chiropractor.

In 1981, Dr. Shoemaker graduated from the National College of Chiropractic with a Doctorate in Chiropractic and a Bachelor of Science degree. After school, Dr. Shoemaker trained for his first six years in private practice with Dr. Dybowski, an experienced chiropractor in Utica, Michigan, learning the finer points of patient care and health management.

On December 21st, 1987, Clairpointe Family Chiropractic was born when Dr. Shoemaker purchased the Thompson Clinic, located on East Warren and Cadieux in Detroit; the Thompson Clinic had been serving the surrounding communities since 1951.

In 2014, Clairpointe Family Chiropractic moved to our current location in Grosse Pointe Farms on the corner of Mack Avenue and Kerby, where we continue to grow, serve and teach the chiropractic lifestyle. The chiropractic lifestyle includes regular chiropractic care, Pharmaceutical-grade supplements, Foot Levelers custom-fitted orthotics, and more!
